Why ugly design works

by

The real role of a graphic designer

Hiya CopyStar!

I saw this post on Instagram the other day…

… and it reminded me of a very powerful lesson: Ugly design works. The designer delivered the goods. How?

He or she showcased the copy and didn’t worry about making the design look pretty. And THAT’S the REAL role of a direct-response graphic designer!

In this case – less is more! Or more accurately – less is BEST!

The copy grabs your attention with a powerful headline. Creates intrigue/fun with the copy. Directs the reader to act, i.e. going to the website.

So – in my opinion – the design worked perfectly for the copy!

By the way – I did click on the link to check out the website – but I got a “sorry the page you were looking for does not exist or is not available.” Too bad. Because…

… if this was a legitimate company – I would bet they got a lot of response from this ad!

I know the power of “ugly design” all too well.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve LOVED a beautiful cover – only to have that cover SPANKED by an “ugly design”.

A-List graphic designer Lori Haller is a master at capitalizing on ugly design. In fact…

… she breaks down her “ugly design” strategy in chapter 9 of my book: “My Life as a 50+ Year-Old White Male: How a Mixed-Race Woman Stumbled Into Direct-Response Copywriting and Succeeded!” It’s pretty awesome!

And you may also know that during the Clayton Makepeace Epic Tribute – Lori gave some A-Level advice about the fonts and color pallets she used to showcase Clayton’s kick-butt controls!

Some of those controls were definitely “ugly design” but man oh man did they work! Click here to scoop up Lori’s tips for your next project. Lori’s special session is definitely worth watching again – and again!

Yours for stellar results,

P.S. I’m thinking of starting a special YouTube series called “Copy & Design”. I want to help you understand how to get the best out of your designer. Tell you what to look for before teaming up with a designer. And maybe even get some amazing designers to actually share their secrets with you?

So – wacha tink CopyStar? Would you find that beneficial?

If so – send me an email to carline@carlinecole.com and put on the subject line: “DEE-ZYNE it Carline!” If I get enough positive responses – I’ll make it happen for you!
