Hey CopyStar!
OK – so I just confiscated – yes – practically STOLE a plant!
Why?
Because for MONTHS I’ve been going to my favorite Mexican restaurant. And as soon as I walk in – I see this ZZ plant.
By now – you know I LOVE ZZ plants! (If you missed my heartbreaking story about “Charlie the ZZ” – click here)
So – this plant was in a pot that was WAY too small for it.
It was cramped…tight…and strangling.
Yet – despite its confining environment – the plant was trying to thrive!
It just needed some help. A little attention. And a little love.
Now – on several occasions – I told the servers I can take the plant and repot it for them.
And each time – I got a “No thanks, it’s ok. There’s a woman who works here and she takes care of our plants.”
Obviously – the woman wasn’t doing a good job!
Well – today – I went to pick up my order of guacamole – and there it was.
The plant.
Still cramped in a tiny pot and just plopped in a larger planter – just for show.
I couldn’t hold back any longer.
I asked to speak to the owner.
A nice guy named “Jose” came out.
Once again – I pitched my offer: “Let me take care of this plant. Let me put it in a new home. I will return it to you. You just have to trust me.”
Jose looked at me, smiled and said, “OK”.
I don’t know if he believed me or if he just didn’t care about the plant. Either way. I took the plant home.
And I named her “Chela” (after the name of the Mexican restaurant)

After eating my guacamole – I set out to give Chela a new home.
Oh my goodness!
The project was more intense than I anticipated.
I couldn’t get Chela out of the pot!
Her root system had overtaken every inch of the pot. There was barely any soil left. I had to cut the pot to free Chela…

And once I freed Chela – I loosened her roots…

Chela is FREE to GROW!
Gave her water – which she quickly soaked up!
Wiped off the thick dust on her leaves so she can naturally shine.
Talked to her and let her know it was going to be OK.
And then I put her in her new home!
And Chela looks stunning!

Then I took Chela back to the restaurant, as promised. The staff couldn’t believe how beautiful she looked! I told them to just water her once a week and she will continue to grow:
