How to Kick Your Writing Into High Gear — and Create Winning Controls!

I’ve got not 1…not 2…but THREE ways to get you out of your writing slump…sharpen your skills… and kick your copywriting skills into high gear!

Follow these steps — and you’ll be smarter…wiser…and RICHER in 2019!

  1. It’s copywriting not copy the writing. Study the masters — but don’t steal copy!  You can learn a whole lot about writing style…powerful themes…and grab ’em by the eyeball headlines when you study controls.  Remember: A control is the successful mail/email promotion that’s currently making moolah for the client!

A promo you KEEP seeing in the mail — is most likely the control!  So — DEVOUR it!  What catches your eye?  What type of headline is it?  What is making you want to BUY what they’re selling?

I highly encourage this type of hands-on learning.  In fact, on my website, I have an E-Store where you can purchase real controls that are working right now — as well as some classics that stood the test of time:

But here’s the warning: Don’t you dare outright steal copy!  This is a very incestuous industry.  Everybody knows everybody.  If you’re a copywriter who steals copy — you’re going to soon become an out-of-work copywriter with a bad rep!  I don’t ever want that to happen to you!

  1. Don’t be lazy. You’ve heard the saying, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. But teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”, right?

Well, I’m here to teach you to fish — but you’ve got to put in the work! Write…Read…Write…and WRITE some more! You only get better writing copy when you WRITE COPY!

  1. Become an “expert” in your industry. Who woulda thunk that turning down jobs would actually give me MORE business! Certainly not me — but it’s true.

Once I started letting prospects know I specialized in the alternative health field and actually turned down non-health projects — and recommended OTHER copywriters for those jobs — I was getting more requests to write health promos. Prospects saw me as a focused specialist in one area. And if health was their field — they wanted a health specialist!

And the other writers I referred for the jobs I turned down actually reciprocated and gave my name to clients looking for a health writer!  Bottom line: I was now only working in the industry I loved — and gaining more experience with every project!  Plus, I was invited to speak at seminars and webinars and dubbed “an alternative health specialist writer.” Woo hoo!
